I have been talking about private vs. public clouds. When I first saw the title of James Urquhart’s video, I thought he was introducing new terminologies just for the sake of doing so. But it turns out that his explanation really helped me to reshape my previous post on private clouds. I attended his talk at CloudWorld about a month ago and found him a good speaker.

His explanation is very clear. Clouds should be classified according to two factors: control and physical location. In addition to private and public clouds, Urquhart defined internal and external clouds.

As this table shows, there are four different combinations of clouds. For ease of reference, I numbered each pane. For example, panes 1 and 4 are typical definitions of private and public clouds, respectively. Pane 3, however, usually applies only to cloud service providers. Pane 2 depicts the externally existent private cloud. Using this notation, I present my figure again here. The numbers in the figure refer to the pane numbers in the table. This now clears up my thinking. Thank you, James.
