CloudConnect Conference

Posted By Zen Kishimoto, Monday, January 26, 2009
I attended CloudConnect (see the attached picture), which started on January 20th at Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California (home of Google's headquarters).  It was the first day and there was only an evening panel session. Three panelists were from Google, Amazon AWS and Salesforce.com (force.com). Another set of panel members were an assortment of government, education and private sector people who are considering cloud computing. These vendors are grouped as:
  • IaaS: (Infrastructure as a Service) à Amazon AWS
  • PaaS: (Platform as a Service) à Google Apps and Force.com

There was not anything new to the vendors’ pitches. But the questions were interesting because they were focused on why cloud computing is a good idea--other than to reduce cost.  The main other reasons cited were scalability (up and down) and security. Regarding security, their claim is actually having your own data is not safe and keeping data in cloud is much more safer.

This is great for users, but how about providers?  Providers should be financially strong enough to sustain this business (very thin margin and required a mass of users).  This will limit only a few who can afford this, namely, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, IBM and Yahoo.  There was a discussion of verndor lock-in but even before that, there are only a handful of providers to start with.

Another question is unless you can access clouds anywhere and everywhere, this will not take off substantially.  What happened to WiMax? More tomorrow……
