Summary Review
This report quantifies direct emissions from ICT products
and services based on expected sector growth. It also looks at opportunities
for ICT to enable major emissions reductions in other economic sectors, and
quantifies these opportunities in terms of CO2e emission savings and cost
savings.

According to the report, the greatest opportunity for ICT is
in helping to improve energy efficiency in power transmission and distribution,
buildings and factories, and transportation. It finds that ICT products and
services could deliver approximately 7.8 GtCO2e in emissions savings and $946.5
billion in cot savings.

The analysis highlights the following areas as the "biggest
and most accessible opportunities for ICT”: smart motor systems, smart
logistics, smart buildings, smart grids. Also noted is the opportunity to
replace high carbon physical products and activities, including books and
meeting, with virtual low carbon equivalents, such as e-commerce, e-books and
telepresence).
In this report, Paul Gipe analyzes how well North American Feed-in Tariffs
(FiT) compare to FiT best practices from around the world. A grading system was developed to compare and
analyze the different North American FiT programs. Grading criteria included factors such as
program and project size caps, contract terms, eligible technologies, and
different tariff rates depending on technology, generation, and size.

The results of the study indicated that North
American FiT programs except for Ontario’s FiT program rank significantly lower
than the European FiT programs, which were seen as being the gold standard. The US FiT programs were hampered by low program caps, no inflation indexing, and only relatively no differentiation within types of technology. Ontario's sophisticated FiT program, which was modeled after the European programs, lead the way receiving full points for program cap, tariff differentiation between technologies, and tariff differentiation within each technology.

To download this report, click here.

In this report, Accenture with contributions from
AltaTerra Research conducted in-depth interviews with sustainability executives
at leading global communications and high-tech companies (CHT) to determine how
their companies are approaching the sustainability challenge. This study also explores how CHT companies
are using sustainability to achieve efficiency improvements and cost reduction
in their business operations, improve the competitive positioning of products
and services, and establish entirely new markets.

Key Findings:

CHT companies are facing a
critical moment for sustainability as consumers begin more attention to
sustainability.

Global businesses and
governments are responding with worldwide renewable energy investment totaling
$100 million in 2007, up from $71 billion in 2006.

CHT companies are moving beyond only
improving internal operations as they begin to integrate sustainability
strategies further throughout their value chain and focus on improving the
green attributes of existing products and offerings.

All companies interviewed had
created internal processes to track energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions. Leading companies including – including Xerox,
HP and Sun – have set GHG emissions reduction targets between 15-25%.

Return on investment was the
most important decision criteria for investments in sustainable operations and
practices. New product innovation and
brand image building were the second and third most important criteria.

There are 5 distinct "leadership
stages” for sustainable businesses:

o Advocate – Vision and initial momentum.
o Practitioner – Public commitment resource and actions.
o Operational Leader – Demonstrated internal and external results.
o Innovator – Creation of strategic vision at scale.
o Market Maker – Market leadership and reputation.

A Review of PV Inverter Technology Cost and Performance Projections

inverter technologies and the cost improvements reduction necessary to meet the
US DOE’s goals for 2020. The DOE’s
Multiyear Technical Plan has the goal of reducing the Levelized Cost of Energy
(LCOE) to $.06/kwh by 2020, which would require inverter costs to decline to
$.25 -.30 Wp.

Key findings from the
report:

Increases in the volume
of sales and learning curve improvements alone are unlikely to reach targeted
inverter price of $.25 -.30 Wp

Inverters struggle to
achieve a 15+ year lifespan and reliability issues could harm entire solar
industries reputation

Inverter prices have
dropped by only 10% with every doubling, compared to 20% for other PV modules

Reducing the cost of inverters
to the DOE’s targets will require continued support from government programs

international report on telepresence and flying provides analysis of
survey results from all three countries where data was collected,
namely Canada, the US and England. The report includes an international
executive summary and cross-country comparisons. Individual country
level reports are also available. Please see below.

The initial question posed in this report is how public opinion about climate
change relates to flying behavior, and opportunities for low-carbon
alternatives to flying. The report goes on to consider the current use of inexpensive
video-communication systems from Skype (with video) and VSee, as well as the
current use and potential adoption of high-quality telepresence systems. It
measures awareness and reputation of seven specific telepresence providers –
Cisco, HP, Polycom, Avaya, LifeSize, Tandberg, and Teliris. Finally, the substitution potential of telepresence for
flying, and the behavior and profile of ‘telepresence leaders’, are examined.

Questions addressed

What proportion of people fly? Fieldwork for the study was conducted online among nationally representative samples of a minimum of 1,000 people in each of Canada, England and the USA – 3,156 respondents in all. For Canada, respondents could take the questionnaire in either English or French. The study was designed to minimize self-selection bias by working with a credible fieldwork supplier—Research Now—and using a robust methodology. The survey authors ensured that the email invitation did not forewarn respondents that the survey was about climate change, and the question order within the survey was designed to minimize bias. To deliver nationally representative samples, strict quota controls were applied in terms of gender, age (18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55+) and region (Canada - West, Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic; England - South, Midlands, North; USA - Northeast, Midwest, South, West).

The summary report, which provides examples of charts and tables from the full international report, and selected insights and analysis, is available for free and immediate download (following free, one-minute registration with our website).
Sustainability has becoming an increasingly important issue

California is one of the first cities in the United States to begin
using an automated system to track municipal greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions and energy, water and other resource use. In "Palo Alto Cuts
Carbon with Hara,” AltaTerra Research presents a case study of Palo
Alto’s implementation of carbon management software from Hara Software,
Inc.

The case study provides context for Palo Alto’s decision to
put a carbon management system (CMS) in place, including approval of a
Climate Protection plan in December 2007 and identification of the need
to transition from a discrete approach between departments to an
integrated approach across departments. It discusses the city’s vendor

process, primary challenges, savings projections, and key lessons
learned.

The case study also presents with an overview of carbon

Building Technology and McGraw Hill Construction details how companies view
sustainable initiatives and the expected benefits from these initiatives. The report finds there has been a doubling of
companies that see sustainability as consistent with their profit mission. Additionally, these companies expect strong
business benefits from sustainable initiatives including increased customer
attraction, lower costs, greater productivity, and employee retention. The report goes on to conclude that the

They argue that little attention is being paid to the potential risks and consequences of scaling up solar PV cell production, and call on the PV industry to address these issues to avoid repeating the mistakes of other similar industries, such as microelectronics.

The whitepaper provides an introduction to photovoltaics and various photovoltaic technologies, followed by overviews of potentially hazardous solar cell production materials and end-of-life hazardous waste issues, as well as options for recycling. It examines the regulatory landscape for PV in the US, EU and other countries, and concludes with recommendations of what the authors would like to see happen and actions that various constituencies can take to help achieve these recommendations.

To download this whitepaper, click here.

Banks therefore have a significant role to play in shaping our future. The report urges banks to consider the fallout from continued investment in carbon-intensive industries. It profiles 40 of the world’s largest financial institutions (16 US, 24 non-US) for an inside, in-depth look at how they are preparing to address the risks and opportunities of climate change. The report is particularly focused on corporate executives and board directors and how they are thinking about the governance systems that are needed for addressing these risks and opportunities.

Key findings:
- Flurry of activity beginning in mid to late 2007, with European banks leading the way, followed by US banks
- Close to 100 research reports on climate change and related investment and regulatory strategies had been released by banks as of January 2008
- 34 banks interviewed participated in the Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP’s) annual carbon-disclosure survey
- 24 banks interviewed had set a target for greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions in internal operations
- 29 banks interviewed reported on financing activity for clean energy projects

However, these steps are just “the tip of the iceberg of what is needed.”

The report further suggests that banks should:
- make climate change a governance priority for executives and board members
- disclose more about climate change risks, the emissions of their own operations and the projects they finance, and how they plan to reduce those emissions
- discuss how they are evaluating/accounting for carbon costs in decision-making process
- set tiered targets to progressively reduce the carbon footprint of their portfolios, and provide information about these targets and how they plan to meet them

To download the full report, click here.

According to the executive summary, "Macy’s Inc. is working to increase its use of renewable energy as part of a corporate goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent between 2005 and 2010. This business case study recounts the decision-making process and the milestone events leading to a major investment in solar energy: 28 on-site solar power installations in stores throughout California—and more projects planned. The main result of the program is that the company has determined that solar power, particularly with third-party financing under power purchase agreements, gives Macy’s lower-cost power, diverse energy sources, and protection from rising energy prices. In addition, the corporate citizenship advantages of solar power have become part of Macy’s Turn Over A New Leaf environmental marketing campaign. In part because of the solar program, Macy’s as a whole also now has a centralized sustainability committee linked to divisional green teams and subject-matter experts."

Full report available for download:

Per-rack power density is at least ten times as great as it was before the advent of volume servers, doubling the total consumption of power by data centers between 2000 and 2006. If this rate continues, data center power consumption could double again by 2011. This report lists several opportunities for making data centers more energy efficient, including federal government initiatives, private-sector efforts, standardization for energy efficiency measurement, and dissemination of best practices information. The Accenture report should be read after this, as it attempted to validate EPA’s theoretical study with seventeen case studies.

Full report

The Silicon Valley Leadership Group’s report, written by Accenture, is a summary of the validating experiments performed by more than twenty-five vendors and research labs, including LBNL, at a real data center provided by Sun. The SVLG report reinforces the conclusion of the EPA report: Applying best practices to legacy data centers can make them as energy efficient as those built to be so.

Full report

Source: The Green Grid October 24, 2007, 16 pages

Summary Review:
There are not many metrics for data center efficiency. Power usage effectiveness (PUE) and data center infrastructure efficiency (DCiE) are the first defined by The Green Grid. Their simplicity is making them popular. This white paper discusses the philosophy behind these metrics and defines them. In reality, collecting the necessary data to derive the metrics is not easy, but this report does not go into that.

Since The Green Grid proposed the reciprocal metrics of Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Data Center Efficiency (DCE) in early 2007, PUE has been widely adopted but DCE has been misunderstood and ignored. This follow-up paper clarifies the confusion and presents a refined DCE metric, data center infrastructure efficiency (DCiE). The Green Grid recommends using either PUE or DCiE, at least until techniques for measuring efficiency have been further refined.

Full report

At the seminar, Gartner’s research vice president, Michael Bell, made the dire prediction that by this year “about half the world's data centers will be functionally obsolete due to insufficient power and cooling capacity to meet the demands of high-density equipment." Gartner analysts further predicted that in-rack and in-row cooling will be the dominant cooling strategy for high-density data centers by 2011. This article is well worth reading for the discussion of power and cooling problems and their possible solutions.

This comprehensive online article covers issues discussed during the Data Center Power and Cooling Challenge seminar held at the Gartner IT Infrastructure, Operations, and Management Summit 2007 in June. They concluded that such conversions could improve power distribution by 28%, which has encouraged proponents of DC power distribution. This report is a must-read with American Power Conversion’s (APC) “An Improved Architecture for High-Efficiency, High-Density Data Centers.” The discrepancy is in the efficiency numbers used by LBNL and APC. APC claims that some power distribution systems, like USP, are much more energy efficient than LBNL assumes.

Full report
