This briefing, the first in a three-part series, will address policies and practices for integrating sustainability into day-to-day operations. Specifically, the session will focus on methods for aligning employee engagement and behaviors with the sustainability goals of organization. Examples that will be discussed include employee performance incentive structures and alignment and software tools to increase employee awareness and change behaviors.

  • Suzanne Fallender, Director of CSR Strategy & Communications at Intel Corporation will describe how performance incentives related to sustainability have been successfully integrated into Intel’s employee bonus program, why this is strategic for their business, implementation challenges, lessons learned, and results to date.
  • Leilani Latimer, Director of Sustainability Initiatives at Sabre Holdings, will describe their Sabre Holdings' education and engagement program around sustainability, how and why they are using Angel Points software as a tool, and program successes and challenges.
  • Jackie Pitera, Senior Analyst at AltaTerra Research, will provide background into strategies for employee engagement for sustainability including current statistics on how engaged employees have better morale and are more productive.

Leading Employee Practices for Sustainability Series

New practices, policies and tools for employee engagement are all playing a role in meeting the organization’s strategic sustainability objectives. These efforts include employee performance management, sustainability training, benefits programs, and broad employee engagement in resource efficiency. In addition, these are helping to create a culture of awareness and innovation, and better to attract, retain, and tap into the ideas of top talent. Organizations find themselves at very different points, in terms of identifying and incorporating new practices for sustainability.

This series, entitled "Leading Employee Practices for Sustainability, presents a variety of employee engagement approaches and examples from leading organizations. The series offers useful information for those looking to expand employee roles in institutionalizing sustainability in day-to-day business practices, as well as those who are just beginning in this process.

  • How have leading organizations structured and aligned performance incentives to incorporate sustainability? How effective are performance incentives in engaging employees in sustainability?
  • How can employees support organizational sustainability? How can employee "green team” members be "agents of change” for sustainability?
  • What data is available to support the claim that sustainability contributes positively to employee recruitment and retention? That ‘engaged’ employees have higher morale and productivity?
  • What information solutions are available to help engage employees in sustainability and support behavior change? How have leading organizations implemented these solutions? What are the benefits and challenges and what have they achieved?
  • What types of green benefits are currently available? How have they been implemented by leading organizations? What have been the successes and challenges?

About the Presenters

Suzanne Fallender is Intel’s Director of CSR Strategy & Communications. Suzanne manages the production of Intel’s annual corporate responsibility report and works with a number of groups across the company to integrate corporate responsibility information into both internal and external communications. Suzanne has more than 14 years of experience in the fields of corporate responsibility and corporate governance research and communications. Previously, Suzanne was Vice President at Institutional Shareholder Services (now RiskMetrics Group), where she was director of the company’s socially responsible investing group.

Suzanne has an M.B.A. from the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University and a B.A. from Trinity College in Hartford, CT. Outside Intel, Suzanne enjoys photography, music and the Phoenix Suns and currently serves on the board of directors of the Tempe Community Council and Arizona Businesses Advancing Sustainability.

Leilani C. Latimer is an innovative professional with proven expertise in corporate sustainability, global strategy, marketing and business transformation. Ms Latimer leads Global Sustainability Initiatives for Sabre Holdings, the world’s leading provider of high-performance travel solutions. She develops and directs the company’s strategy and initiatives in collaboration with business leaders across the corporation; Sabre Travel Network, Sabre Airline Solutions, Sabre Hospitality Solutions and Travelocity.

Ms. Latimer is a Board Member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, a member and former Chair of the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee for the Global Business Travel Association and a graduate in Sustainable Management of the Presidio Graduate School in San Francisco where she works and resides. She also is also on the Advisory Board of NoHold Inc. and is an active member of the Silicon Valley Italian Executive Council. She is fluent in Italian, and holds both US and EEC citizenship.

Jaclyn Pitera is a senior analyst at AltaTerra Research. She has advised firms in developing their sustainability strategy and implementation plans, particularly regarding carbon footprint mitigation, energy efficiency, green building, sustainable material sourcing, employee behavior change, and marketing and communications, generating for client firms documented cost savings, competitive differentiation, and risk mitigation. She has also advised start-up companies in the green building and energy efficiency industries, providing strategy development, industry and market analysis, and product life cycle analysis. Prior to AltaTerra, Jaclyn was a sustainable business consultant for Williams-Sonoma, Business for Social Responsibility, H&M, Cummins, and JBG, a real estate developer in the Washington D.C. area. Jaclyn holds an MBA, a master of science in sustainable systems, and bachelor of science in biology from the University of Michigan.
